Mr Mole Statue Maintenance
Our cast iron and aluminium garden statue range needs very little maintenance. Once the verdigris or rust finish have been applied, over time each piece will develop its own unique patina based on the conditions the surface of the metal is exposed to.
If left in a damp wet environment such as a pond, moss will likely grow. In dry weather the surface texture and colour will become more weathered.
Whilst the rusty finish tends to be more desired, you can paint over the rust if you’re looking for a smoother unformed finish. simply apply a primer to the surface before painting.

Cast Iron VS Cold Cast Iron
Understanding the difference between traditional cast iron and the cheaper alternative, cold cast iron (often called cast resin or bonded bronze), is essential for making a long-term investment. While cold cast iron is a mixture of plastic resin and metal powder, our traditional cast iron is 100% solid, genuine iron.
Feature | Our Traditional Cast Iron | The Cold Cast Iron Alternative |
---|---|---|
Composition | 100% genuine, solid iron alloy (melted and poured metal) | Iron powder mixed with plastic resin and filler |
Outdoor Durability | Extremely High | Low to Moderate |
Longevity | Generational – Built to last for decades, often centuries. | Limited lifespan; prone to aging in 3-8 years outdoors. |
Weather Resistance | Superior: Withstands high winds, heavy rain, and extreme temperatures without warping or cracking. | Vulnerable: Resin is susceptible to UV damage and cracking from freeze-thaw cycles. |
Weight & Stability | Heavy and Solid: Provides excellent stability, preventing statues from being easily knocked over or stolen. | Lightweight: Can be unstable and is prone to physical damage from impacts. |
Aesthetic Value | Timeless & Authentic: Develops a rich, natural patina over time, increasing its character and value. | Artificial Look: Often has a smoother, glossy finish that may fade or flake. |
Investment | A genuine long-term investment and heirloom piece. | A more disposable, budget-friendly option. |
